		<description>There is no need to emulate anything that vi does.

Emacs contains all the elemental commands to navigate, or highlight
syntactic elements.   

show-paren-mode               highlights the matching paren.
blink-matching-open           shows the matching paren in the mode-line
forward-sexp                         moves the cursor to the matching paren
backward-sexp                     likewise, but backwards

Of course, you may not like the key bindings for certain commands, 
but you can remap these with global-set-key, or local-set-key.</description>

You can run that in any directory for which you have write privileges. I typically create a directory for the purpose of downloading software tarballs, etc.</description>
